Audacity is an incredible free audio editor that's just as good as premium paid-for software. Use it to make your own recordings, remove noise, cut and combine clips, apply special effects and much more, for truly professional results.

Why you need Audacity

Audacity can record audio from both a microphone and computer playback, with sample rates as high as 192,000Hz. Level meters monitor the volume levels during recording useful for spotting clipping. There's also support for recording at 24-bit depth.

Audacity can import and export dozens of different file formats, then easily adjust your files with multi-track editing, smooth fading, labelling, syncing and more. Audacity also lets you remove annoying hissing, humming and other background noises - perfect if you can't guarantee the quality of your recording environment

Audacity can alter frequencies with its Equalization, Bass and Treble, High/Low Pass and Notch Filter effects, and the volume can be adjusted using to the compressor, amplify, formalize, fade in/out and adjustable fade effects. There's also built-in crash recovery and support for plugins.

How to make karaoke tracks with Audacity

Audacity is a budding karaoke star's dream thanks to its ability to strip the vocals from your favorite songs. Vocals are usually in the center of a stereo tracks – half on one channel and half on the other – so inverting one channel cancels the two parts out. With a good quality sound file, it's usually very effective.

1. Get the MP3 encoder

In order to export your finished karaoke song in MP3 format, you'll need the LAME MP3 encoder. This isn't included in Audacity by default, but you can download it free here, then install it by opening the EXE file.

2. Import and split your track

Once that's done, import your chosen track into Audacity by dragging it into the main window. On the left-hand side of the waveform, beside the name of the track, you'll see a black downward-pointing arrow. Click this and select 'Split stereo track'.

3. Mute the vocals

Double-click the bottom track in Audacity to select it, then click Effects > Invert. Click the menu arrow beside each track's waveform and select Mono, then click File > Export Audio. MP3 is a good format so you can play it using any media player, and you can stick with the standard export settings. Choose whether to edit the track's metadata (adding the word 'karaoke' to the title might be helpful) and click OK.

4. Find the lyrics

Lots of sites publish song lyrics to help with your home karaoke sessions (particularly useful if you've chosen to croon along to REM), but MetroLyrics is our favorite thanks to its accuracy, excellent search tool and the fact that it compensates copyright holders for the right to publish their lyrics. Once you've stripped the vocals from a track in Audacity, find the words and sing along!
